Psychodrama, developed by J.L. Moreno in early 20th century Vienna, was the first role-playing method used to heal mental health issues and train desired behaviors. It is the foundation of all experiential role-playing techniques for therapy. Moreno believed that people are “role players” and that the self emerges from the roles we play. Psychodrama is a mind/body method that includes the whole person, as Moreno recognized that leaving the body out of therapy leaves out significant parts of the mind. Psychodrama also provides practice in embodying and experiencing new behaviors, developing spontaneity and creativity. Moreno created the triadic system of psychodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy.
